The course includes an overview of the general principles of GIS and practical experience in its use. The lectures follow the organization of the textbook. The practical component involves the hands-on use of desktop GIS software packages.  The course includes a final project component, through which students will investigate the application of GIS technologies in depth.The project is intended to provide a deeper understanding of a GIS application through hands-on experience. The project should investigate a particular research problem using GIS software from class. You should acquire (and, if necessary, create) the spatial and attribute data required to complete the project.  The project should involve some type of spatial analysis. Projects can be done in teams of up to two members (see exception below). There are several stages to the project, with due dates outlined below. The quality and timeliness of these intermediate products will be incorporated into the final project grade.It also teaches the essential skills of operating a functional GIS through the use of ArcGIS software package. By completing this course, students will understand the operational processes of spatial data acquisition, editing and QA/QC, metadata development, geodatabase design, spatial query and display, spatial analysis and modeling, preliminary GIS application development, cartographic mapping and dynamic visualization, and GIS implementation basics. Students will also be exposed to Google Earth and common open source GIS tools, as well as the basic concepts of remote sensing and Global Positioning System (GPS).GIS technology has broad applications in natural and social sciences, humanities, environmental studies, engineering, and management.
