PinchPoints, Nips and Sharp Surfaces hazard:

These Hazardsin organization can be preventing by report it to your supervisors so thesituation can be addressed. Place some form of machine guarding in place tokeep people from getting caught up in the pinch point. In other cases, installengineering controls. Never work on or around a paper machine without properoperational and safety training, Always follow approved job procedures for eachjob task, always prioritize your own personal safety above any job task. Use cautionwhen working with your hands. Always use a tool with a sharp surface, such as aknife, blade, or saw, only as it was designed to be used. Be careful whenmoving around the moving fabrics of a paper machine. Wear all of the requiredpersonal protective equipment and follow all of the standard operatingprocedures. Be cautious when performing tasks that are new, unfamiliar, and/ornot routine for you. Keep an eye for sharp surfaces such as metal burrs, protruding bolts, and other sharp or rough edges.

IngoingNips, Hot Surfaces and Slip, Trip, & Fall Hazard:

To avoid the above mention problems by Always ensure paper machinesreceive proper preventive maintenance on a routine basis, Make sure allnon-preventive maintenance needs are addressed and corrected as soon as theyare identified, don’t wear jewellery at work, especially loose, danglingjewellery, Using caution before reaching in to an area or touching something, understanding the purpose of the different parts of the paper machine, andwearing appropriate PPE. Also, remember it may take a long time for a hotsurface to cool down-don’t expect heat to disappear the moment the power iscut. Provide training to the workers, install certified walkway auditor, provide STF Prevention inspection program.

Inhalation,Noise and Hose Hazard:

Suitable control measures would be provide combustible dusts training, designed such equipment to minimize dust creation or accumulation and followgood housekeeping practices. Wear hearing protection, like ear plugs and earmuffs, when working in loud work environments. When using a hose, alwaysposition the hose so it’s not behind you and not wrapped (even loosely) aroundany part of your body.

OutgoingNips, Hazardous Chemicals and Confined Space Hazards:

To keeploose objects that could potentially enter the nip area away from the nip. Goodhousekeeping and putting things away after their used is one safety tip, andplacing appropriate machine guarding around the nip, using caution beforereaching in to an area or touching something, understanding the purpose of thedifferent parts of the paper machine, and wearing appropriate PPE. Employer shouldprovide a proper Hazard Communication (“HazCom”) training. Before working in aconfined space, a worker should receive confined space training. The processshould be governed by a confined space permit process as well.

Losingbalance, Pressurized hoses and Fire Hazards:

Wearproper PPE appropriate to the task you’re performing, and know the location ofall emergency showers and eyewash stations in your work area. It’s a bestpractice to always open supply valves slowly. Provide a system of fire tetrahedron, keeping your equipment clean and well-maintained are the best things you can doto prevent fires at work.

How to improve safety in workplace:

As anemployer, it’s employer responsibility to protect employees and provide a safeworkplace. Use these points to help make your workplace safe, healthy, andproductive.

1. Train employees well

Comprehensivetraining is a must for preventing workplace injury. Make sure that all ofemployees have access to – and complete – all safety training for theirpositions.

2. Reward employees for safe behaviour

Rewardsare an easy way to encourage workplace safety. Giving out small rewards toemployees who follow safety policies keeps them engaged, which can make a bigdifference in reducing workplace injuries.

3. Partner with occupational clinicians

Occupationalmedicine clinicians can provide valuable insight into workplace injury andprevention. These clinicians can help you prevent work injuries by visitingworksite and identifying areas where there’s a high risk for employee injury.Physical and occupational therapists can also improve workplace ergonomics anddevelop human performance evaluations to help screen candidates for physicallydemanding roles and aid in the return-to-work process.

4. Use labels and signs

Labelsand signs are a cheap and effective way to quickly communicate importantinformation. They’re usually simple and rely on pictures to detail hazards andproper procedures. These tools are good reminders and warnings for even themost experienced worker.

5. Keep things clean

A messyworkplace can lead to unnecessary accidents. Make sure boxes are stacked safelyand spills are cleaned up quickly. Conduct regular inspections to check forpotential dangers such as tangled cords, messy floors, and disorganized tools.Programs like 5S often provide beneficial improvements in organization that canlead to reduced clutter.

6. Make sure employees have the right tools andhave regular equipment inspections

Theright tools and equipment create a better product and a safer work environment. It’s also important that all equipment is cleaned, serviced, and inspectedregularly. Machine malfunctions are one of the most dangerous workplacehazards.

7. Encourage stretch breaks

Stretchbreaks are an easy way to improve workplace ergonomics and employee health.Taking even five minutes to stretch can ease muscle tension and loosen joints, reducing the potential for repetitive motion injuries. Active movements havebeen shown to be more effective than passive stretching alone.

8. Implement safety protocols from the start

Workplacesafety starts from day one, which means hiring qualified people who payattention to detail. A safe workplace starts with employees who follow safety requirementsand perform their jobs per the established procedures. Some employers work withphysical therapists to analyze the physical demands of each job role. Thefindings are used to create functional job analyses and post-offerpre-placement functional testing.

9. Keep an open dialogue

Make iteasy for employees to come with health and safety concerns. They can reporthazards right away and identify potential areas of concern may not havenoticed. Appoint or nominate a safety captain who is empowered to communicateconcerns identified by employees to leadership on a consistent basis.

10. Have regular meetings on workplace safety

It neverhurts to be over-prepared. Regular meetings to review safety rules and discussprevention keep workplace safety top of mind so that when something doeshappen, everyone knows what to do right away.

Conclusions:

During my visit, Health and safetyculture that was observed acceptable and many things were properly controlledbut there was also seen hazards that was the main issues at plant; there aremany hazardous chemicals used in papermaking process. Quite a few of them arevery hazardous. This hazardous chemical includes Anhydrous Ammonia, ChlorineDioxide, Formaldehyde, Hydrogen Sulfide, and Turpentine. Confined spacespresent many hazards, including some that can lead to death. One of the biggesthazards inside a confined space is the potential for hazardous gases to collectinside of them. These gases can be toxic, combustible, or present other hazardsto a worker in a confined space. Another hazard is that the confined space mayhave oxygen-deficient air, which could lead to a worker falling unconscious ordying.

To keep loose objects thatcould potentially enter the nip area away from the nip. Good housekeeping andputting things away after their used is one safety tip, and placing appropriatemachine guarding around the nip, using caution before reaching in to an area ortouching something, understanding the purpose of the different parts of thepaper machine, and wearing appropriate PPE. Employer should provide a properHazard Communication training. Before working in a confined space, a workershould receive confined space training. The process should be governed by aconfined space permit process as well. The Management was highly dedicated tocontrol hazards as much as possible to ensure safe the field for everypersonnel.

There were also good thingshappening at the plant that the workers were very cooperative and well trained.Excellent security system is noticed and in all the sections, no one is able tovisit without proper verification. Well trained guards were present in everygate. Good hotels, neat and clean toilets, eating facility, resting facility, hand wash stations, drinking water points and other welfare facilities wereprovided to workers in factory. Proper selected parking area for officers andworkers were provided away from the working facility while managementpromisesto handle things that were improperly controlled. Some of these were veryhigh-risk activities which needed management attention.

It is amoral duty of a company to manage health and safety issues regardless of otheraims or targets related to productivity.
